Obama - Smart or Dumb?

From ABC via the Drudge Report: "On Thursday (June 23, 2011) at Fort Drum, President Obama told troops from the 10th Mountain Division that he previously "had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn't receiving it posthumously." Wrong. Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti was actually killed in Afghanistan on June 21, 2006. In September 2009, President Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor posthumously."

Is this guy a nit-wit or does he intentionally make such gaffs? This is only one in a long line of previous gaffs. Is he just totally inept that he can't remember the circumstances under which he awarded the Medal of Honor? It is not something done routinely and easily forgotten. If he is the "smartest person" as labeled by so many in the national news media, how is it he makes so many "dumb" gaffs? Where are the journalists on this? Poor old Dan Quayle is still getting grief from them on the one gaff he made.
