National Debt

By Congressman Michael McCaul

Democrats voted last week to continue to put families deeper and deeper into debt: $40,053 for every American. They have clearly ignored the demands of taxpayers over the past year to cut spending so they can continue to expand government. Raising the debt ceiling by another $1.9 trillion to $14.294 trillion represents the largest one time debt limit increase in our nation’s history.

Folks, this is incredulous. A debt of $40,053 for every American man, woman and child. ( I wonder if it includes illegal aliens.) Our Gross National Product (GNP) for 2009 was $12,970 billion. If I haven't screwed up the math then $14.294 trillion divided by $12,970 billion will take over a 1,000 years to pay off the debt using the entire 2009 GNP each year. That is difficult to get my head around. I just can't comprehend billions and trillions. Millions is difficult enough. Just to give some perspective on a trillion$ think of seconds of time. A trillion seconds is almost 31,700 years. Now think of 14 trillion. Will we ever be able to reduce this debt to something manageable? Is the Obama crowd purposefully bankrupting the country? It gives cause to pause and reflect.

Congressman McCaul is my Congressman in the Texas 10th District. He is a conservative, and especially a fiscal conservative.
